The 100 Mile Challenge… Hmmm…
I just got home from a day of shopping with my mom (Retail Therapy! It was great) and am flaked out on my sofa. Time to rest. I’m feeling pretty tired. I’m emotionally drained but it was wonderful to be with my mom. She treated me to some clothes, lunch, and I bought shoes. I need to do what I can to process and deal with where I’m at. I know the Stages of Grief. I know that in this area of my life, this area of grief, I’m in stage 4. Stage 5 sometimes, but definitely stage 4. I’m sad, not really myself, not able to handle crowds and I’m not myself. But it will come. Time.
I came home and flipped on the Television. The 100 Mile Challenge is on the Food Network. I think the awareness of this idea is important! I definitely need to spend more time thinking about eating locally, just as I need to spend time eating more economically, and healthfully — so that I feel good. I don’t think I’m going to strictly follow the challenge though. It’s a fantastic idea, but with the pain and stress I’m feeling, I don’t want to give up coffee, tea and chocolate. I also don’t want to give up non-local spices — as I try not to cook with a tonne of fats I’d rather have my spices. But, for starters, I can plan my meals, buy produce at the Granville Island Market where there are many examples of local foods, and artisan products. And you know what? They taste so much better. I think especially as I move forward with my plans in the next few months, I’d like to have a deep freezer full of lots of meals. Things that I can thaw so that I’m never tempted to buy my lunch or many dinners out. What would be awesome, is to do an evening of cooking with a couple of friends, using local, organic foods. Enjoy a fantastic dinner together with friends, and do some big batch cooking together that we can share so we can fill our freezers for our library of suppers. Making several meals that can be portioned appropriately. Any takers?
100 miles. How far is 100 miles? The nice thing is the TV Show’s website has a reference tool for local suppliers. GREAT.
This feels like a good thing to do that is more sustainable, local, healthier.
